Valsartan Recall; Valsartan Related Cancers

This popular blood pressure medicine has been linked to several serious illnesses.

Patients with high blood pressure have been watching the news very carefully. In July 2018, the FDA  announced its recall of certain lots of  VALSARTAN, which is a popular blood pressure and heart medication. Among the most concerning Valsartan side effects are a host of cancers, including cancer of the liver, kidney, and pancreas.

Not long after the FDA announced its Valsartan recall, other worldwide agencies followed suit.  An “impurity” within the drug later revealed to be the presence of a carcinogenic chemical called N-nitrosodimethylamine (“NDMA”)- has caused Valsartan to be removed from the market in 22 countries worldwide.

Scientists believe the link between Valsartan and cancer stems from the fact that certain Valsartan tablets contain unacceptably high levels of NDMA. A particularly noxious substance, NDMA has the potential to cause:

  • Liver cancer
  • Kidney cancer
  • Colorectal cancer
  • Stomach cancer
  • Bladder cancer
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Liver injuries

Importantly, not all Valsartan tablets were contaminated with unacceptable levels NDMA. Only certain lots produced in 2014 or later appear to be linked to the Valsartan cancers. Any patients who are still taking Valsartan should continue with their regular dosage and consult with their doctor or pharmacist to receive a suitable replacement.

Likewise, not all patients who took Valsartan will get one of these illnesses, though it appears that those who do come down with a form of Valsartan cancer have some commonalities among them.  For example, most of the afflicted patients took Valsartan for at least 30 days. Additionally, Valsartan cancers tend to appear at least one year after patients have taken the drug.

This Valsartan recall has prompted the nationally renowned law firm of Harrison Davis Steakly Morrison Jones to begin representing individuals who are suffering from Valsartan related cancer and related kidney issues. We plan to seek full compensation for patients and families who have been harmed by the drug.

If you or someone you know was diagnosed with one of the Valsartan cancers at least one year after taking the drug, the illness may be related to Valsartan.  You may be entitled to receive compensation from the manufacturers.
