Do these things if driving in heavy rain

As one of our Texas readers, there's no denying the fact that you've become accustomed to long periods of dry weather. However, as you know, heavy rain can move into the area without notice. If this happens and you find yourself on the road, it's important to adjust your approach to ensure that you remain safe.

There are many risks associated with driving in heavy rain. For example, poor visibility is a major concern. Along with this, if you drive too fast, hydroplaning could come into play.

Fortunately, there are things you can do to improve your safety. Here are three tips for driving in heavy rain:

-- Be patient. Even if you're in a hurry to reach your destination, you must slow down and follow the rules of the road. If you drive too fast, you could lose contact with the road, thus increasing the likelihood of a crash.

-- Use your headlights. Not only does this make it easier for you to see the road, but it allows other drivers to see your vehicle.

-- Leave more space. It's never a good idea to tailgate another vehicle, but you definitely need to leave additional space when driving in heavy rain.

Even if you follow these tips when driving in heavy rain, others may not do the same. For this reason, you need to keep an eye on other drivers at all times, doing your best to avoid those who are taking risks.

If you are involved in an accident in the rain, try to move your car to the shoulder of the road. From there, if you're injured, call for an ambulance. The rain will complicate your situation, but nothing changes the fact that your health always comes first. Once you have received medical care, you will need to address your insurance or compensation claim.
