Tips for safe driving in heavy rain

As a Texas resident, you know that long spells of dry weather are extremely common. You also know that heavy rain can hit at any time. When it does, you need to be prepared for driving in inclement weather.

Wet conditions contribute to poor visibility and can impact the ability of your tires to grip the road. If you are faced with more rain than you or your vehicle can handle, the best thing you can do is pull over in a safe area and wait for a break in the weather.

Other tips for safe driving in heavy rain include:

-- Eliminate distractions, like the radio. An exception would be a station tuned to weather updates in the event of tornado outbreaks, which can be common in Texas.

-- Slow down. Even if you are in a hurry to reach your destination, you need to reduce speed and exercise extreme caution.

-- Turn on your headlights. Whenever your windshield wipers are operating, your vehicle's headlights must be on as well.

-- Leave more space. Wet roads mean large trucks require more distance to slow and stop. For this reason, leave plenty of space between your vehicle and others.

These are just a few of the many things you can do to drive safely in heavy rain. Unfortunately, others may not take the same approach. Instead, they drive the same in the rain as they do when it's dry.

If you're injured in an accident in the rain, contact police and an ambulance. You can determine at a later date how to pursue compensation from the negligent party that was at fault in your accident.
