Parents of actor killed in crash take action against Jeep maker

Most of the nation remembers the bizarre accident that took actor Anton Yelchin's life this past June. In a tragic turn of events, the 27-year-old actor who was featured in the latest Star Trek film series died when his Jeep Grand Cherokee crushed him to death. Now the actor's parents are seeking legal action against the SUV manufacturer.

The incident happened on the 19th of June. By all accounts, Yelchin parked his Jeep in his driveway and then exited the vehicle. However, the Jeep did not stay in park and subsequently rolled down the driveway, pinning Yelchin between a fence and his mailbox. Reports indicate the young actor remained alive for an unknown period as he suffocated and eventually expired.

Victor and Irina Yelchin, the actor's parents, have filed a products liability and wrongful death suit against the SUV maker, Fiat Chrysler. The lawsuit claims that the Jeep's gear selector was "defective and poorly designed and manufactured." Specifically, the suit contends that the gear selector did not engage in the park position, leading to the crushing death of the actor.

At the time of the accident, the Jeep Grand Cherokee was already under recall because the gear shifters in the vehicle may confuse drivers. The Jeep is one of a total of 1.1 million recalled vehicles with confusing shifters that may result in the vehicle rolling unexpectedly after the driver has tried to put the automobile in park. As of June, 2016, a government investigation concerning the gear shifters uncovered more than 250 accidents that caused injury to 68 people.

It is safe to assume that many drivers in the state of Texas own a Jeep Grand Cherokee with these confusing gear shifters. If you or someone you know have suffered injuries in a gear selector-related accident involving this Jeep model, you may be eligible to file a products liability suit.
