Can overloaded commercial carriers cause truck accidents?

Every city and state in the nation has more than their fair share of truck accidents. Waco, Texas, is no exception, with many people suffering injuries or even death as a result. Many of the factors that lead to truck accidents are well-known such as driver fatigue, distracted driving and poor vehicle maintenance. However, there is a fourth factor that many motorists like you might never see coming. It is the overloading of large commercial vehicles.

Overloading can happen for several reasons, but one of the most prevalent is the industry's trend of using smaller trucks. While these trucks save companies money on the acquisition of equipment, they tend to be overloaded so that the truck can still carry a lot of cargo. Unfortunately, these attempts at reducing costs can result in truck accidents. Here are just a few ways an overloaded truck can increase road hazards.

-- Reduced braking distances

-- Reduced emergency handling capability

-- Increased tire failure danger

-- Increased risk of a rollover

-- Unexpected load shifts

-- Increased risk of losing control of the vehicle

Although overloading these vehicles directly violates federal and state-level regulations, it could still occur. Often, other motorists do not know when a commercial vehicle is overloaded. This means they may be in even more danger than they think they are when traveling near large trucks.

If you have been involved in a truck accident, it may be beneficial to have someone investigate the accident to see if overloading may have been a contributing factor. Often, a personal injury attorney can advise you about how to initiate such an investigation as well as represent your interests should you choose to file a lawsuit.
