Motorcycle awareness: Understanding the dangers

Motorcycles are a preferred form of transportation for many people. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Agency, though, car versus motorcycle accidents have increased more than 100 percent since 2005. The number one cause of motorcycle rider fatalities is failure to yield by the motor vehicle. Many of these accidents were preventable if the driver of the vehicle had simply noticed the approaching motorcycle.

Here are some tips to prevent motorcycle accidents:

-- Give motorcycles a full lane of the highway.

-- Plan your route so that you minimize left turns.

-- Anticipate what the motorcyclist is going to do.

-- Know when motorcycle crashes are most likely to occur.

-- Remember that it is easy to miss a motorcycle.

Motor vehicle drivers are more likely to look for other cars, not motorcycles; therefore, drivers must always make a conscious effort to keep their eyes open for motorcyclists.

Motorcycle accidents are likely to occur when:

-- A vehicle is making a left turn.

-- A biker is in your blind spot.

-- The road conditions are hazardous, such as when there are potholes, railroad tracks, wet leaves, oil and more.

If a you or a loved one are injured in a motorcycle accident that wasn't your fault, you may have a right to seek compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, emotional trauma and much more. The medical expenses for a motorcyclist accident can be astronomical, as there is no steel cage to protect him or her. The injuries are usually severe.

An attorney can assist you with seeking compensation for your injuries and damages.
