What does the Consumer Protection Safety Commission do?

The U.S. Consumer Protection Safety Commission is responsible for protecting the public from "unreasonable risks of injury or death associated with the use of the thousands of types of consumer products under the agency's jurisdiction." Each year, property damages, injuries and deaths from unsafe consumer products cost taxpayers more than $1 trillion. The CPSC protects consumers and their families from products that pose a mechanical, chemical, electrical or fire hazard.

When a manufacturer realizes that product is unsafe, a voluntary recall may be issued or the CPSC can issue a Letter of Advice stating what action should be taken. If a recall is not issued when there should be one according to the CPSC, the agency may begin court proceedings to have the recall issued.

The CPSC keeps a detailed list of all recalls on their website, as well as information on regulations, laws and standards, safety, research, statistics and more.

In most cases, a voluntary recall is issued for a defective product by the manufacturer after complaints are made by consumers. Food product recalls are not regulated by the CPSC, but by the federal Food and Drug Administration.

If you or a loved one have suffered an injury because of a defective product, you may have a right to seek compensation from the manufacturer, the retailer, the designer and others. At Harrison Davis Steakley Morrison, P.C., our firm not only has the experience to file and pursue such a case, but we have the resources as well. We look forward to helping you seek the compensation you deserve for the injuries you or a loved one has suffered.
