Tips for preventing injuries at summer camp

In most cases, both parents and children look forward to summer camp. The parents may enjoy a little time to themselves and the kids can have a blast with all the camp's activities. However, summer camp is not without its dangers.

In order to prevent many common injuries at summer camp, considering the following:

-- Make sure that the camp is accredited by the American Camp Association. The directors of the camps should also meet the ACA's standards.

-- Camps should ensure the safe transport of children in their care, such as the use of seat belts and booster seats.

-- Camps should always make sure kids wear the required safety gear when participating in activities, such as helmets and life jackets.

-- Label any medication that your child needs, such as an inhaler, with your child's name and the directions for when he or she needs the medication.

-- Children should apply sunscreen with an SF30 designation in the morning, after water sports and other times as needed.

-- Remind your child of the camp rules and to ask for help if he or she needs it.

-- Remember to pack such things as lip balm, Band-Aids, hand sanitizer, bug spray, a hat and a whistle so that your child can signal for help if needed.

These are just a few on the things to think about before your child heads off to summer camp. It's also important to make sure that the staff members of the camp are formally trained in CPR and in recognizing concussions. If your child is injured while at summer camp, you may make a claim for compensation if negligence was an issue.
