What are some past famous product recalls?

A product recall is done to protect consumers from illness, injury or death that can occur if the product is used. Some famous products that are in many homes today have been the subject of recalls in the past. Here are seven past recalls that put our entire nation on alert.

-- Tylenol, 1982, Johnson & Johnson. Thirteen people died after taking Tylenol purchased from stores in the Chicago area. It was determined that the bottles of Tylenol were tampered with. Someone had put potassium cyanide in the product. This recall eventually led to packaging reform for over-the-counter medications.

-- Vioxx, 2004, Merck. Even though the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Vioxx for treating arthritis, the increased risk of stroke and heart attacks led to Merck paying out $4.85 billion in order to settle 27,000 lawsuits.

-- Valdecoxib, 2005, Pfizer: This was another arthritis drug that ended up with about the same concerns as Vioxx. The legal charges were $1.8 billion and Pfizer also was fined one of the largest criminal fines in our nation's history.

-- Dell, 2006, Sony: The lithium-ion batteries that power Dell laptops were recalled because there were many reports of fires caused by the power devices. At 4.1 million recalled batteries, it was one of the largest electronics recalls ever.

-- Easy Bake Over, 2007, Hasbro: Almost 250 reports involving children's injuries from burns resulted in 1 million Easy Bake Ovens being recalled.

-- Toyota, 2010, Toyota Motors: Two motor vehicle recalls involving 2.3 million vehicles and 4.3 million vehicles were issued because of gas pedals that would become stuck.

People who are injured or made ill because of dangerous products have a right to hold the manufacturers and others responsible in court. An experienced lawyer can provide you with more information on how such a lawsuit works.
