Preventing truckers from drowsy driving

The problem of drowsy driving isn't just limited to those who haven't had enough sleep. It can also happen when someone takes certain medications, has a sleep disorder, drinks alcohol or works shift work.

Unfortunately, we don't know the exact second that our bodies succumb to sleep. While falling asleep while driving is obviously dangerous, driving while you're sleepy is dangerous as well. When you're drowsy:

-- Your decision-making ability is affected.

-- Your reaction time is slower if you have to steer or brake quickly.

-- You won't pay as much attention to the road.

Commercial drivers, such as those who operate buses, semis and tow trucks, are more likely to drive while drowsy. In many case, the constant push to get a load delivered results in drivers pushing themselves when they are clearly drowsy or tired. In addition, it is estimated that more than 70 million people have a sleep disorder, many of whom operate commercial vehicles.

There are several warning signs that drivers should be aware of that can signal he or she is becoming too drowsy to drive. These include:

-- Trouble remembering the last few miles you have driven.

-- Drifting out of your lane.

-- Blinking or yawning frequently.

-- Striking the rumble strip that runs between the shoulder of the road and the furthest right-hand lane.

When tractor-trailers are involved in an accident, there are often catastrophic injuries or deaths involved. If you have been injured in a truck accident due to truck driver fatigue, you have a right to seek compensation for your losses. At Harrison Davis Steakley Morrison PC, we represent injured victims in their quest to hold drivers responsible for the injuries they cause.
