Motorcycle accidents and traumatic brain injuries

A traumatic brain injury is caused by a jolt or blow to the head that injures the brain. Some of the most common causes include sports injuries, falls, car crashes and motorcycle accidents. It's the leading cause of disability and death for people between the ages of 1 and 44.

The chances of suffering a TBI during a motorcycle accident are high. The most important thing a motorcyclist can do to reduce the risk of a TBI is to wear a helmet. The helmets are designed to protect the skull and brain and to prevent an object from piercing the brain. The crushable part of a helmet absorbs part of the energy that would reach the brain and head if a helmet was not worn.

A traumatic brain injury can result in a mild concussion to a severe, permanent brain injury. The symptoms of a traumatic brain injuries are as varied as the people who suffer them. Some of the most common symptoms include:

-- Loss of consciousness

-- Disorientation and confusion

-- Amnesia and memory loss

-- Headaches

-- Fatigue

-- Poor concentration

-- Loss of balance and dizziness

-- Emotional disturbances

-- Vomiting

-- Seizures

When you are injured in a motorcycle accident that is not your fault, you have the right to seek compensation for your injuries and other losses. This is done through a personal injury civil suit. An attorney experienced in seeking compensation for injured victims and their families can give you more information on how to proceed with such a case. Those whose negligence and/or recklessness has caused injuries to others deserve to be held accountable.
