How to have a fun and safe holiday

With Christmas nearly upon us, gift-buying is in full swing. Unfortunately, there will likely be some products sold as gifts that will be recalled due to safety issues. Those issues may range from a mislabeled jar of peanuts to a bicycle with a serious safety problem. There are other safety issues that you might need to remember this holiday season, too. Below, you'll find some holiday safety tips to help ensure a fun, festive -- and safe -- time as you celebrate.

-- Decorating the tree: Few things are as pleasing to look at during Christmas as the tree; however, it can be full of potential safety problems. For example, angel hair is made from spun glass. Always wear gloves whenever you handle it. Double check lights to ensure there are no broken sockets, loose connections or frayed or exposed wires. Poinsettias can be poisonous to children or pets.

-- Fireplaces and candles: In 2013, about 2,200 deaths were caused by burns or other fire-related injuries. Never leave candles unattended and make sure they are out of the reach of children. Don't burn candles near curtains, trees or other flammable items. Don't burn wrapping paper, wreaths or trees in the fireplace.

-- Turkey fryers: Many people will be heating up oil in which to fry their holiday turkey. Since 2002, there have been 672 people injured in turkey fryer incidents. Another $8 million in losses for property damages has also resulted. For safety, it's important to keep the turkey fryer over 10 feet away from the house and only use it on flat ground. You should always have a fire extinguisher ready and only use a thawed and dry turkey.

If you are injured because of a defective product, you can seek compensation for your medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages and more. At Harrison Davis Steakley Morrison, P.C., we can provide you with more information on how to proceed with such a case.
