What personal protective wear is available to motorcyclists?

Fall has brought rain and much cooler temperatures for much of the United States. While some motorcyclists have decided to garage their bikes until the warmer weather reappears, there are some bikers who ride year-round. Having the right personal protective gear is imperative as the days get shorter, just as it can be during the warmer months of the year.

When it comes to preparing to ride in cold weather, one of the most important things a rider can do is layer his or her clothing. Each layer that is added can help the body stay warm by adding insulation. An outer layer that is windproof will help keep out that bitter wind that often comes in the fall.

Of course, long sleeves and long pants not only help keep riders warm but can help prevent some road rash during a wreck. Leather jackets and chaps will do even more to prevent this very painful injury.

Rain suits can help riders stay alert because riders who are cold and wet will not be as alert or comfortable as those who are dry. Gloves and boots that resist water are much more comfortable than those without any type of water-wicking properties.

Helmets, which are only required for those 20 and under in Texas, protect in four ways. First and second, the outer shell of the helmet helps resist abrasion and penetration. Third, the liner inside the shell absorbs shock when the helmet strikes against something. Finally, the retention system, also called the chinstrap, will keep the helmet on the rider's head during an accident.

Personal protective gear is important when riding a motorcycle anytime of the year. However, no gear can prevent all injuries a motorcyclist can suffer in an accident. If you are injured in an accident because another driver was negligent, you have a right to seek compensation for your injuries and losses.
