How you can reduce the chance of truck accidents

An accident involving a semi-truck and a smaller vehicle almost always end with serious injuries or deaths. There's simply too much of a size and weight difference between the two vehicles. Many drivers aren't sure how to drive safely around 18-wheelers. With a few tips on safety, though, more motorists can learn to how to be more aware and drive safely around big trucks.

-- Truckers need a lot of room, and crowding a truck can lead to a disaster. If a truck has a tire blowout, your vehicle can be hit by large pieces of rubber. It's also likely that the truck will start to swerve after a tire blowout.

-- Pay attention to a truck driver's blind spots. You are likely aware of your vehicle's blind spots. There are many more spots on a semi-truck. When passing a truck, complete your pass as quickly as it is safe to do. The truck driver might not even know you are passing. This means that a lane change or swerving to miss something in the road can end in a horrible wreck. Additionally, it's best to pass semi-trucks on the left side, as there are fewer blind spots on that side than on the right side.

-- Give truckers room to make their turns. Many accidents are caused when a truck driver makes a turn (especially for right turns) and another driver thinks there is enough room to go between the trailer and the shoulder. Unfortunately, the trailer will come back over and can smash into the other vehicle.

These are just a few tips to help motorists drive safely around semi-trucks. If you are injured in an accident involving a truck, you may have the right to seek compensation. An experienced truck accident attorney will be able to determine your legal options.
