School bus crash kills 2

At about 7 a.m. on a recent Tuesday, the driver of a Buick struck a school bus on the South Loop East of Interstate 610 in Houston. The collision caused the bus to slam into a guardrail. It went off the overpass, crashing onto the ground below. Two students who attended REACH, a Houston charter high school, were killed in the crash. They were 14 and 17 years old.

The bus was headed to Furr High School, which is another public school. REACH is located on the Furr High School campus.

According to the general manager of the school district's transportation department, there are about 34,000 students in the district who ride school buses. About 40 to 50 percent of the buses used each day have seat belts. However, the students have the option of wearing them because it's so hard for the bus driver to enforce their use.

There are other safety features, such as a ceiling that is crush-proof. The bus involved in the accident was just in for maintenance this past June. It was bought new in 2008. The driver of the bus, who has been with the school district for the last three years, has a clean driving record.

There were seven cameras on the bus, which are used for security purposes. The footage is currently being reviewed.

The driver of the car was not charged, as of yet, and police said that they don't believe alcohol or drugs were involved. There is no word on whether the Buick driver was injured; however, the bus driver and two other students were seriously injured in the crash.

When an accident such as this one happens, it affects everyone around the victims, including the school's other students, teachers and others. The families of victims killed in similar accidents do have a right to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the person or persons liable for the accident.
