The inherent dangers associated with riding a motorcyle

Nearly every Texas resident will agree that riding a motorcycle is more dangerous than riding in a car. The issue is that motorcycle riding is such a pleasurable and enjoyable experience that it tends to imbue riders with a sense of confidence. This is not only in their own riding ability, but in the level of attentiveness and carefulness of motor vehicle drivers they are sharing the road with.

Unfortunately, no matter how skilled and careful a motorcyclist is, there are many external factors -- like negligent and irresponsible motorists, bad weather, poor road conditions and defective motorcycles -- that could cause a motorcyclist to be injured or killed in a crash. In fact, according to one federal government study, motorcyclists are at least 26 times more likely to die in a collision than a regular car driver.

Those who are not convinced yet may want to look at the following statistics on motorcycle safety. In 2013, approximately 4,381 motorcyclists perished in collisions. Also, although motorcyclist death figures were steadily declining beginning in the early 1980s, in 1998 they began to increase again -- most likely due to the surge in motorcycle popularity that began in the late 90s. More recently, motorcycle deaths have been declining some years and increasing in other years. The most recent figures in 2013 saw a 7 percent decline in motorcyclist deaths, but 2013 death rates were still the rates in 1997.

There are some massive gender discrepancies between the number of male motorcyclist deaths and female motorcyclist deaths. In 2013, 91 percent of motorcyclist fatalities were males. Meanwhile, of the female motorcyclists who died, 61 percent of them were riding as passengers.

Should a Texas motorcyclist get injured or killed in a crash as a result of another driver's negligence or unlawful behavior, injured parties may have viable claims for justice and financial restitution under the law.
