What licensing does a trucker need in Texas?

A commercial vehicle driver in Texas has the responsibility to be a safe driver. Texas has several highway safety tips and regulations for these drivers to help maintain the safety of the roads while allowing for the transport of goods in these large vehicles. If you're hurt by one of these drivers, you will need to find out if he or she was driving legally.

For example, all commercial vehicle drivers need to have passed the Texas Commercial Driver's License test and be at least 18 years old. Although drivers could potentially pass the test at 16, it is unlawful for a driver to be under 18 and managing a commercial vehicle. If a driver fails this test, he or she cannot legally drive his or her commercial vehicle, even if he or she has a general driver's license for passenger vehicles.

A driver who isn't safe on the roads can have his or her commercial license revoked. The commercial driver's license comes in one of three classes. A Class A license allows the driver to drive vehicles weighing over 26,001 pounds. A Class B license allows the driver to transport passengers, generally 24 or more, and to drive vehicles of 26,001 pounds or more. A Class C license allows the driver to drive any vehicle to transport 16 to 23 passengers or some kinds of hazardous materials.

On top of these restrictions, there are also endorsements that the driver will need to obtain. For example, if the driver needs to drive a tank vehicle, he must obtain the N endorsement, proving he is skilled enough to drive the vehicle. An H endorsement allows drivers to work with hazardous materials, and S endorsements prove the driver can operate a school bus.
