What are 2 of the worst auto defect cover-ups in history?

Texas residents are careful not to do things that look like they could be dangerous. No matter how cautious people are, though, they can end up buying innocent-looking products that carry a dark secret: the products are extremely dangerous due to design defects. Automobiles are one type of manufactured product that has a lot of potential for having deadly design flaws.

Unfortunately, even when auto manufacturers know about dangerous design flaws, they sometimes hide them from consumers. For example, take a look at the following defective and dangerous product recalls, which are some of the worst of all time, but the automakers tried to keep them hidden from American drivers.

In 2010, Toyota implemented what has largely been called the worst managed automotive recall in history. The issue related to problematic floor mats and gas pedals that caused uncontrollable acceleration of the vehicles. More than 9 million cars were recalled, but not before the company engaged in a lot of evasion and denial over the issue -- which was both dangerous and deadly.

In 1978, the Ford Pinto wowed consumers with its eye-catching design; however, the very same design made it dangerous in a rearward collision due to the way the fuel tank could get punctured. Ford knew about the design issue ahead of time, but it refused to spend money on redesigning it to be safer. Due to its dangers, the car became known as a "barbecue that seats four." Ford later recalled 1.5 million Pintos in 1978 after an investigation by federal regulators.

Automakers who hide dangerous defects and drag their feet on issuing auto recalls can be held financially accountable in civil court by the people who suffer injuries from the defects. Although no amount of litigation can right such a wrong, a successfully navigated personal injury lawsuit can be a way for individuals to obtain money to pay for medical care, rehabilitative services and other kinds of damages.
