Truck driver tires may be dangerous at high speed

Many Texas tractor-trailer drivers are pushed to make tight deadlines, often with too little downtime to rest and rejuvenate between deliveries. In view of that, their temptation to speed may overtake their common sense. When that happens, the rig can be in danger of crashing due to a problem that few may consider: the tires.

Tires are something that Texas tractor-trailer drivers should keep in mind, especially if they go at high speeds. Truck tires are only meant to stay in good condition on trucks if the sustained speed is 75 mph or less.

To provide a margin of safety, drivers should go at speeds below that, like 70 mph. Unfortunately, many drivers go at 85 mph, putting a strain on their tires that they weren't meant to handle. This results in blowouts and wrecks, at minimum causing damage to vehicles, and often injuring and killing people.

Truck drivers should keep this in mind, keeping to safe speeds and consulting directly with the company that provides their tires to affirm what the safest speed is for them. Additionally, states might want to revisit speed limits, which are 85 mph in some parts of Texas.

Going above safe speeds can result in the generation of excessive heat. That in turn can damage the rubber of the tire, resulting in catastrophic accidents. Additionally, road debris, heavy loads and underinflation can damage tires. Truck drivers should have their tires checked before getting out on the roads, go a reasonable speed and have all the information about their vehicle they need to stay safe. If they fail to, they may find themselves and their company liable for damages or even cause someone in a smaller vehicle to die.
