Child safety on roads should be a primary focus

For parents and government alike, child safety on the nation's roads should be viewed as fundamental. Of course, for most parents, it already is. Fortunately, the government is now redoubling its efforts. If you join in with this effort, you can help keep kids safe as they travel throughout the country.

A recent research report by the organization Safe Kids Worldwide established that in the United States and in countries around the world, the leading cause of death for children ages 5 to 19 is road traffic injuries. This statistic inspired the current drive to increase safety for children on the roads.

The United Nations responded by declaring one week in early May as Global Road Safety Week. It is intended to specially focus on children. There is also an awareness campaign being promoted at hundreds of locations including elementary schools. It is promoted online with the hashtag #SaveKidsLives. The focus is on getting a document called the Child Declaration for road safety to policymakers. It has over 100,000 signatures so far, and a copy of it was delivered to U.S. Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx.

You can get involved by posting safety statements on social media using the campaign's hashtag. You can emphasize things like the importance of wearing a helmet when riding on a bicycle, and making sure to always wait for a walk signal when crossing a street and to stay in the crosswalk when doing so. Younger children should be encouraged to only cross the street with an adult as well.

By communicating these things to those in your social network, you can further understanding about how important they are to those you know who are less safety-conscious than you are. You can encourage them to be better informed, and thus promote safety on the roads for all children.
