What should you do if you are in a car accident?

Getting into a crash of any kind while driving on the roads is a scary prospect. If you drive carefully and pay close attention to your surroundings, you can minimize the chance of that happening. However, if it happens in spite of your best efforts, you can at least handle any accident you may be in as well as possible.

First, any injuries need to be addressed. Call an ambulance when needed for injured parties in either car. If the only injuries are minor and do not require medical treatment, then you'll need to continue with the next steps.

That starts with having your key information easily accessible. Insurance papers and other key documents can be kept securely in a glove compartment so that you can readily get to them in the case of a minor accident. Keeping pens and paper in the same place is a good idea too, so you can take down the other driver's information.

Presuming that your car doesn't present an ongoing risk, you may want to get your car on the side of the road. Car accidents are often compounded when the first two cars block traffic, because other cars may not see them in time and may hit them too. Of course, if moving your car might damage it further, you might need to call a tow truck. Every situation is different and you'll need to use your best judgment in all regards.

When you gather information from the other driver in the accident, be cordial but businesslike. Stick to the exchange of information. Saying something like, "I'm sorry", which you may view as just being polite, may be used against you later as though it was an admission of culpability.

If you can take pictures of the scene, that will be helpful for insurance claims and any legal action that may occur. You can also get identifying information from the policeman who comes to the scene of the accident if one does. That will also help in any subsequent proceedings.
