Texas youth dies in tragic motorcycle accident

In a tragic twist of fate, a 17-year-old Texas youth was killed in a motorcycle accident the day after listing it for sale.

Investigators from the Texas Department of Public Safety are still investigating the motorcycle crash. However, it appears that the youth's motorcycle struck an oncoming Hyundai Sonata as the car was began making a left turn on Texas 105. When officials arrived on the scene, the youth was pronounced dead.

Although it is yet unclear which driver may have been at fault, an attorney that focuses on personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits knows that additional safety considerations are often required when sharing the roadway with motorcyclists.

For example, motorcycles can easily disappear in a motor vehicle operator's mirror blind spot, due to their smaller size. A jury might agree that safe driving should require all drivers to check their blind spots by looking over their shoulders before merging lanes, and not just in their mirrors.

Motorcycles can also stop in a shorter distance than larger vehicles. Given that, it is a safe practice for motor vehicle operators to allow greater distance when following behind a motorcyclist.

Finally, it is also important to use turn signals for every turn. In this case, it's conceivable that the driver of the Hyundai Sonata simply did not see the oncoming motorcycle. Believing that there was no oncoming traffic, the Sonata driver may have started to make the left turn without signaling.

Hopefully, investigators will be able to determine the cause of this accident. If negligence by the Sonata driver was a contributing factor, an experienced personal injury attorney can help the surviving family members consider their options, such as filing a wrongful death lawsuit.
