Tips for driving safely during winter months

As local readers know, Waco, Texas almost never gets snow. However, it does average about 36 inches of rain per year. In addition, temperatures in Waco can drop to the low 30s during January and February. As careful drivers know, rain and temperatures close to the freezing point can be a deadly combination.

Winter road conditions in Waco may be better than in many other parts of the country. Nevertheless, a recent motor vehicle accident serves as a reminder to use caution and monitor road conditions closely during the next few weeks.

The accident involved several motorists in northern Texas. Authorities believe that the drivers may have been traveling too fast for slick road conditions, resulting in a pile-up. Unfortunately, the crash resulted in fatal injuries. In response, authorities from the Texas Department of Transportation, or TxDOT, issued a reminder that their website and 24-hour hotline offer free road condition information.

Safe driving is expected of every motorist on Texas' roads and highways. As a personal injury attorney knows, that expectation could be characterized as a duty of care that properly licensed motorists owe to each other. Many driving behaviors may be required to fulfill that responsibility, including checking road conditions through TxDOT.

If another driver's failure to obey traffic signals, patterns or drive appropriate to road conditions caused a motor vehicle accident, the crash victim should consult with a personal injury attorney. An attorney knows that persuasive evidence will need to be collected to present to a jury in a civil lawsuit. That evidence might also be used in settlement negotiations with the negligent driver's attorney and/or insurance provider.
