Do motorcycle helmets provide protection at high speeds?

Perhaps you have heard that Department of Transportation helmet testing does not take into account the impact of high speed motorcycle accidents. Many people believe helmets are useless at high speeds, but this is just a myth. People take this myth for fact because of the way the DOT tests helmets.

During testing, a helmet is dropped from a height of six feet, producing a 13 mph impact. What you should understand is that 13 mph does not represent the speed at which a motorcycle is traveling. That figure actually represents how fast a motorcycle accident victim's head strikes the ground in an accident. The DOT tests helmets in this fashion because it has been determined that in the majority of motorcycle accidents riders fall about six feet and hit the ground at about 13 mph. As such, helmets do indeed protect your head when traveling at speeds greater than 13 mph.

Many Texas residents who enjoy riding motorcycles hate wearing a helmet. They want to feel the wind in their hair and enjoy the freedom of riding unfettered. However, helmets were invented for a reason and that reason is to protect the head should an accident occur. In fact, all of the gear you see riders using was created for protection. This includes goggles, helmets, gloves and leathers.

Even if you still do not quite believe that helmets can protect you, why not err on the side of caution? Until it is proven beyond a doubt that helmets do not work, riders should continue to make use of available safety gear. If you have already been injured in a motorcycle accident and you believe a negligent party was at fault, a personal injury lawyer can put you on the path to financial and physical recovery. Seeking compensation can provide you with the means to pay for your out-of-pocket recovery expenses.
