How can I protect my child from burns?

Children are curious by nature. They don't realize the dangers that can be found all around them. When it comes to burn injuries, parents, guardians and other caregivers must be vigilant in order to prevent such injuries to children. Here are some tips to help prevent burns to children.

-- Avoid carrying hot liquids when you are carrying a child.

-- Don't use tablecloths with young children, as they can pull them down.

-- Use back burners on a stove and turn the handles of the pans toward the back of the stove.

-- Unplug irons, curling irons, straighteners and other items that get hot. Put them up and out of reach of children who might plug them in.

-- Reduce the water temperature at your water heater below 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Always make sure the bath water isn't too hot before you put your child in it.

-- If you use a humidifier or vaporizer, use one that uses cool water.

-- Always test the temperature of food and drinks before giving it to your child. Never heat a bottle up in the microwave.

-- When outside, make sure the car seat surface is not hot, nor the buckles or straps.

-- Do not allow your children to be near a grill or fire pit.

-- Leave the fireworks for the professionals and forgo those in your backyard. This includes sparklers, which can burn up to 2,000 degrees -- that's enough to melt some metals.

These are just a few tips that can help prevent burn injuries to children. If your child was injured because of someone else's actions, you may have a compensation claim. An experienced lawyer can provide guidance on your legal options.
