Could child head injuries harm relationships with parents?

Child head injuries can have a significant effect on a child's mood and behavior, according to a study completed in Canada. It was published in the Journal of Neuropsychology. According to the results, children who had a minor traumatic head injury still had a risk of suffering psychological effects.

The study analyzed 47 children who were all under the age of five and who had suffered a mild head injury. That group was then compared to children who suffered a fractured bone or had no injury at all.

Six months after the child suffered the brain injury, researchers observed the child and the child's parent for 45 minutes of play. There was no difference in how the orthopedic group. However, the interactions between the parents and the child who suffered a mild head injury were significantly worse than those of the other group.

The parents were required to complete questionnaires that deal with how the child's behavior was before the accident. More information was collected six months after the accident.

The researchers conclude that the findings of the study "have implications for children's post-injury social development and highlight the importance of monitoring social outcomes even after minor head injuries."

If your child was injured in an accident that was not his or her fault, you may have a claim for compensation. There is a time limit that must be abided by or you may not be able to file the case. It's important to have an experienced attorney on your side as your fight for the compensation your child deserves.
