Salad mix recalled for listeria contamination

Dole has voluntarily recalled of bagged salad mix, greens and lettuce due to listeria concerns. A Dole plant in Ohio is where the bacteria had been traced, and it will be closed for four weeks, according to an email that grocers received. In addition, Dole quit producing 14 kinds of salads and stopped promotions and ads for the next month.

It's not just Dole brands that are getting hit with the recall, though. The affected salad mixes start the product code with the letter "A" and include the following brands:

-- Simple Truth

-- Marketside

-- Fresh Selections

-- The Little Salad Bar

-- President's Choice Organics

Some of the retailers affected include:

-- Wal-Mart

-- Kroger

-- Food 4 Less

-- Save-a-Lot

-- ValuMarket

-- Jay C

-- Meijer

Dole is trying to get the recalled salad mixes replaced in stores with mixes from other plants, but the snowstorm last week has hampered those effects. Kroger reports that it only has about 25 percent of what it usually carries in its produce section. It should be at 60 percent by the end of the week. Some of the private label bagged salads and lettuces are being shifted to a North Carolina facility.

A Michigan woman's death has been traced to listeria, and there have been 11 adults and children that have been hospitalized because of it.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, listerosis can affect people up to two months after they eat contaminated products. The symptoms can include gastrointestinal distress, diarrhea, muscle aches and fever.

Dole's produce buyers are looking for alternative suppliers for lettuce, spinach, cabbage and greens. The spinach and lettuce was coming from California. The greens were coming from Texas and Georgia. The cabbage was also coming from Texas.

If you or a loved one have become ill due to a contaminated food product, you may have a right to seek compensation. A Texas attorney can provide you with the information you need on what steps to take next.
