Motorcycle accident injury and fatality statistics

Motorcycles are a terrific way to enjoy the outdoors, and they can be inexpensive to operate. Unfortunately, though, when an accident occurs, the bike offers no protection against injury or death. Motorcycle accident injury and fatality statistics provide insight into these crashes and what might be done to decrease injuries and deaths.

According to the Insurance Information Institute, there were 88,000 motorcycle injuries in 2013. There were 5,000 more injuries in 2012 according to a report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The number of people who died in motorcycle accidents was 4,668 in 2013, which was 318 fewer fatalities than in 2012.

Even though the number of fatalities in motorcycle accidents fell 6.4 percent in 2013, 56 motorcycles out of every 100,000 were involved in an accident with a fatality. The NHTSA reports that only nine passenger cars out of every 100,000 were involved in a fatality. In addition, motorcyclists were around 26 times more likely to die in an accident than those in a passenger car. In terms of injuries, motorcyclists were five times more likely.

Over half of those killed while on a motorcycle were 40 years old or over. That percentage has increased from 2004 to 2013 by 39 percent. The average age of motorcyclists killed in 2004 was 38. It was 42 in 2013.

Twenty-eight percent of motorcyclists who were killed had a .08 percent or high blood alcohol concentration in 2013. Those with a BAC at or above .08 percent were less likely to wear a helmet than those without a measurable BAC.

While the number of injury and fatal motorcycle accident is falling, those who are injured or have lost a loved one due to another person's negligence may have a claim for damages. Those damages may include medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages and more.
