Wrong-way drivers and their victims in Texas

A recent investigation by NBC 5 in Texas into wrong-way accidents found some very sobering results. Data from the Texas Department of Transportation was used to find out where wrong-way crashes occur most often. The investigative team wanted to know if there was more that could be done by to keep this tragedies from happening.

In 2014, the number of accidents where someone was going the wrong way increased by 13 percent from 2013. Over the last four years, 2,800 people suffered injuries and 269 people were killed in this type of accident. When looking at wrong-way crashes in North Texas alone since 2011, there were over 700 people injured and 50 people killed.

According to the report, most of the people who are driving the wrong way have been drinking. Others are confused or distracted. Some of the most common locations for wrong-way accidents over the past four years include:

-- Dallas: From Downtown Dallas north to Forest Lane on Central Expressway. Eleven wrong-way crashes occurred here, with two fatalities.

-- Arlington: From U.S. Highway 287 to I-30 on Texas 360. Seven wrong-way crashes have happened here.

-- Fort Worth: On I-30 close to Beach Street, three wrong-way crashes have killed five people since 2011.

So, what is needed to prevent wrong-way crashes? According to some of the top highway safety experts, there need to be more aggressive safety measures. Researchers, including those at the National Transportation Safety Board, have said that different warning lights or signs on freeway exits ramps could help by getting a drunk driver's attention before he or she ends up going in the wrong direction. Unfortunately, the news investigation found that many of these suggested chances have been put in place.

Victims and their families can seek compensation for injuries or deaths due to a wrong-way drivers. While no amount of money can undo the effects of the accident, it can help pay for economic and non-economic damages. An attorney can give you more information on how to begin a civil lawsuit against those responsible for your accident.
