Who is most at risk for bicycle-related injuries?

Bicycling is a fun way to get around town, get exercise and avoid traffic snares. Unfortunately, bicyclists also have a higher risk of getting injured or dying when involved in a car-bicycle accident than the occupants of the motor vehicle. Almost 800 people lost their lives in bicycle accidents in 2010 and around 515,000 people were injured and seen at an emergency department.

Who is most likely to die while riding a bicycle? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, adults over the age of 45 and young people between the ages of 15 and 24 were most likely to die due to bicycle-related injuries. For non-fatal injuries, those between the ages of 15 and 24 and children ages 5 to 14 have the highest fatality risk when on a bicycle.

Females do not have as high a risk as men when it comes to fatal or non-fatal bicycle-related injuries. Most of these accidents occur in urban areas without intersections.

Preventing bicycle-related deaths and injuries is possible in many cases. Wearing a bicycle helmet reduces the risk of brain and head injuries. All bicyclists, no matter what age they are, should wear bicycle helmets. In addition, wearing fluorescent clothing or reflective clothing is also a good way to make you more visible to motor vehicle drivers.

If you were injured in a motor vehicle-bicycle accident that wasn't your fault, you should look into your opportunity to seek compensation or reach a settlement with the at-fault person's insurance company. You shouldn't be responsible for medical bills, lost wages and more because of another person's negligence.
