Should parents take extra care on playgrounds?

Playgrounds are one of the most common places for parents to take their children. It is easy for some parents to presume that their local playground is safe, but in many respects it may not be. This is why it is very important for parents to take extra care on playgrounds.

For one thing, while your child is well-raised, the children of some other people may not be. For that reason, you'll need to guard against the other children pushing or crowding yours. That can be very dangerous since a lot of playground equipment is elevated, and a single shove can result in a life-changing fall.

Additionally, some of the equipment may be in disrepair. It may be rusty or have loose parts, either of which can turn fun moments into dangerous moments. Taking a stroll around each piece of equipment and checking it out before your child starts to play is always a good idea.

Another good idea is making sure that your child is dressed appropriately. They shouldn't have any necklaces, loose drawstrings, scarves or purses that can get caught and be a strangulation risk.

Making sure that your child stays on equipment that is suitable for his or her age is also helpful. Their sense of what they can safely do is much less developed than yours, so always be on the look out for them trying to use equipment that they're not big enough for.

With babies and toddlers in specific, it is best to let them walk on a small surface, so there won't be anything to trip and fall on. By taking these things into account, you can maximize the probability that your child will have a safe playground experience. Of course, packing a first aid kit is always a good idea, too.
