Helmets help prevent springtime motorcycle injuries

The Vanderbilt University Medical Center has a first-hand view of the changes in accident trends depending on the season. Many motorcycle riders who keep their bikes in all winter will get them back out in the spring, and accident numbers tend to soar. This comes from just having more bikes on the road, of course, but other contributing factors could include riders who are a bit rusty after a winter off and drivers of other motor vehicles who are simply not used to looking for motorcycles.

According to the trauma center, this spike in injuries is very abrupt and very consistent. Every year, there is a jump of about 50 percent. Other recreational vehicles, like four-wheelers and All Terrain Vehicles may also send in more accident victims as the weather warms up.

Professionals noted that attention to detail was very important in preventing accidents. This is something that is often missed during this hectic time, when people are excited and rushing to get their vehicles out.

However, they also noted that safety gear -- and especially helmets -- can also play a big role. Some motorcyclists will wear armor like that worn on dirt bikes, or they may wear leather jackets. While safety gear cannot prevent a crash, of course, it can vastly reduce the amount of serious injuries and take what could have been a fatal crash and turn it into a far less dangerous event. Accident numbers may stay high, but riders can still stay safe.

When errors made by other drivers result in injuries -- something that's very common in the spring -- motorcycle riders have to know what rights they have to compensation.
