Construction Accidents: Dangerous Workplaces Lead To Serious Injuries

The recent bridge collapse of an overpass onto a section of Interstate serves as an important reminder of the potential dangers facing construction workers. Heavy equipment, elevated work surfaces and scaffolding, industrial chemicals and repetitive motions can be a recipe for injuries or even wrongful death unless adequate safety precautions are taken. Even then, an equipment malfunction due to a manufacturer's defect might result in an accident.

In a recent example, a section of an overpass onto an Interstate highway collapsed, killing one construction worker and totaling the front of a semi truck. Although the investigation is ongoing, a preliminary theory is that the accident was due to human error rather than a structural defect.

The section of overpass at issue was scheduled to be demolished. As a time-saving measure, the contractor removed the sides first. Apparently, that made the structure unstable, contributing to the eventual collapse. According to one commentator, taking the sides out first may have caused the section to slip off its supports.

Speak With A Personal Injury Attorney To Protect Yourself

When an accident happens on a construction site, an injured worker should report all details to his or her supervisor. However, a consultation with a personal injury attorney is also advisable. The reason is that there is a lot at stake after an accident, and it can affect you in both the present and the future.

To the extent equipment was defective or the project's architect or engineer were negligent, product liability or personal injury law might be implicated. An attorney who focuses on a broad spectrum of injury claims can help an injured worker or, in the case of a wrongful death, the worker's surviving loved ones pursue all available legal options.
