Texas motorcycle accidents may be on the rise

A recent motorcycle accident involving a 43-year-old Waco man remains under investigation. When authorities arrived on the scene, there were no other vehicles around. To rule out foul play, authorities have enlisted the help of their accident reconstruction team. It's unclear whether a hit-and-run may factor into this tragedy.

In a recent post, we explored motorcycle crash data. The numbers tell a sobering tale. According to data from the Texas Department of Public Safety, nearly 500 motorcyclists were involved in fatal crashes in 2013, representing a five percent increase from the previous year. However, the state DPS is also doing its part to contribute to road safety.

Specifically, readers may not have known about a motorcycle safety course offered by the DPS. Topics are progressively harder, and the advanced course includes training on variety of defensive driving techniques, including high-speed maneuvering, swerving and avoidance techniques, traction control, emergency braking and counter-steering.

However, not even the most proactive approach to safe motorcycle operation may be able to avoid injury caused by a negligent driver. From driving too fast for slippery road conditions to simply failing to pay attention to traffic patterns, any number of distractions might lead to a crash.

The sad truth is that motorcyclists may be more at risk in crashes. A motorcycle lacks the insulation of a vehicle's metal frame to absorb some of the impact of a crash. Consequently, any motor vehicle accident involving a motorcycle has the potential for deadly injuries. If another driver's negligence did result in the death of a loved one on a motorcycle, the surviving family may have the right to recover damages. A personal injury attorney can explain the process of a wrongful death lawsuit in greater detail.
