MATT MORRISON WINS SIGNIFICANT BACK-TO-BACK VERDICTS

04/16/12

Matt Morrison recently obtained back-to-back verdicts on behalf of the Firm's clients totaling over five million dollars.

After a two week trial in Salt Lake City, Utah, Matt obtained a verdict in the amount of $3,303,213 on March 16, 2012 on behalf of two adult children whose father died after the defendant-physician prescribed fourteen times too much methadone.  Andrew Tuegel, an associate in the Firm, assisted Matt and served as second-chair in the trial.

Matt and Andrew presented evidence to the jury that the defendant, Dr. Paul Ray Taylor, grossly erred in calculating the appropriate initial dose of methadone and failed to monitor the decedent, Brad Robinson, after prescribing the medication.  As a consequence, the jury determined that Dr. Paul Ray Taylor caused the death of Brad Robinson.

Based upon the compelling testimony of the Plaintiffs, the adult son and daughter of Mr. Robinson, the jury awarded $3,000,000 in mental anguish damages and $3,213 for burial costs.  The jury further found that Dr. Paul Ray Taylor was reckless and awarded an additional $300,000 in punitive damages.

This jury verdict is believed to be the largest medical malpractice verdict in the history of Davis County, Utah.  Prior to trial, the defendant offered $0.

Immediately after completing trial in Salt Lake City, Matt traveled to Bangor, Maine to begin another two week trial on behalf of a victim of methadone.

On April 12, 2012 after less than two hours of deliberations, a jury in Bangor, Maine returned a unanimous verdict in favor of the Firm's client in the amount of $1,912,934.  Matt presented evidence that the defendant-physician, Steven Weisberger, D.O., prescribed too much methadone which caused the plaintiff to stop breathing.  Though the plaintiff was resuscitated, she suffered a brain injury that devastated her life and her ability to function and work.

Based upon the evidence presented, the jury awarded our client $50,500 for past medical expenses, $500,000 for future medical costs, $500,000 for mental anguish, $250,000 for physical impairment and $612,434 in lost future income.  Prior to trial, the defendant offered $0.
